Sugar Shane Mosley-Where Does He Go Now

July 1, 2009 · posted by Julius Stecker · 12 Comments ·

Sugar Shane Mosley is one of the top 10 fighters of his generation. Yet he is a man without a fight. Some of that is on his own accord. Some of it is not. He has been begging to get a fight with the great Manny Pacquiao, but that is not going to happen. The closest Shane will get to Manny Pacquiao will be at the ESPY awards in a few weeks, where both are nominated for an award in the Best Fighter category. (This is if Manny is there to accept his award) Now Shane is back to the drawing board. I wanted to examine a few options that he could look forward to this year or early next year.

Manny Pacquiao WILL Beat Miguel Cotto!!

July 1, 2009 · posted by Julius Stecker · 103 Comments ·

Life, death, and taxes are the the only things certain in life. You can add in Manny Pacquiao beating Miguel Cotto into that equation as well. I have been thinking about this over the last few days, and I can’t think of any way Miguel Cotto defeats a motivated and determined legend like Pacquiao. He just does not have it in him. Now things could change like varibles that are out anybodys control. But if Manny Pacquiao is at his best, he will be defeat Miguel Cotto. Here are the reasons why.

25-75–It May Be Mosley’s Only Chance

I have been the biggest advocate of a Manny Pacquiao-Sugar Shane Mosley fight. It would be a great event and a great fight. But this will be my last article on this subject. I am giving up on it. There is now a 99% chance Miguel Cotto gets this fight. Cotto-Pacquiao will be a good fight in its own right, I just thought Pacquiao-Mosley would be much better to watch and much better for history. Sugar Shane Mosley has stated to me and other interviewers, that this fight is not about the money. And I do believe him. But he needs to go a step further. He needs to put his money where his mouth is. He needs to come out and to commit to taking a much lower purse then a 40-60 split. Would it be fair, no. But then again what is. Nothing is fair. If this is truly about legacy then fighting Pacquiao at 25-75 or 30/70 split would make sense.

Cotto is Deserving–But Is Not Mosley

June 26, 2009 · posted by Julius Stecker · Comments Off ·

Miguel Cotto is an excellent young fighter. He has great skills, and he has perhaps the best left hook to the body in the business. He is very deserving of fighting anybody, and he is a top 10 pound for pound fighter. With all of that said, he is not Sugar Shane Mosley. Yes he beat him in 2007, close fight that I will discuss in a bit. But in totality he is not yet even close to Shane in accomplishments and achievment. Beating the man, does not make you the man. Jermain Taylor beat Bernard Hopkins twice, but does anybody really think he is as good as Bernard Hopkins. Iran Barkley knocked out Thomas Hearns, but does anybody rational really believe Barkley was a better fighter. No I am not part of the Shane Mosley PR team. In fact, I think Manny Pacquiao beats both him and Cotto, but Mosley is leaps and bounds above Cotto. I know this has been a recurring theme of some of my other stories. But I still can’t believe people are justifying Cotto as a better opponent for Pacquiao instead of Mosley.

It’s About Legacy–Cotto or Mosley??

June 23, 2009 · posted by Julius Stecker · 23 Comments ·

I often catch the black and white fights on ESPN Classic. Heck I set the DVR to record the Ringside episodes of Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Muhummad Ali. Or I just go on Youtube and watch old fights of the greats that I read about as a youngster. Every time I watch those films or glimpses. I realize that is what it is all about. It is isn’t about the money. Yes money is great, they and us could all use a little more. Some more then others. It is about that time when they were kids when they laced up the gloves for the first time in that musty smelling gym. It is about the time they fought their first amateur fight, it is about the first time they were declared world champion. Folks it is about legacy. In 2020 or 2030 when your kids, or mine pop in a fight tape. They will want to hear the stories about when Manny Pacquiao fought Juan Manuel Marquez in 2004, or when Sugar Shane Mosley fought Oscar De La Hoya at the Staples Center in 2000. Legacies and stories are the allure of the sport of boxing. It is what separates boxing from MMA and most other sports. So I wanted to examine what fight would leave the greatest legacy for the sport. Would Pacquiao-Mosley fight or a Pacquiao-Cotto fight be the best for boxing history. We all know both are deserving of fighting Pacman. But in the end which fight would leave the most memories.

Sugar Shane Mosley Interview—Manny Pacquiao will Make More Money Fighting Me!

June 19, 2009 · posted by Julius Stecker · 9 Comments ·

mosleyJust as it seems like Miguel Cotto may get a shot at the great Manny Pacquiao. I wanted to speak to Sugar Shane Mosley, to get his take on that probable fight and also his potential showdown with Manny Pacquiao. Let it be known here, after speaking to Shane I realized that this fight to him wouldn’t be about money. (He discussed his portfolio with me, lets just say he will be fine regardless if he gets the Pacquiao fight) A fight with Pacquiao would be about legacy, the fans, and the people. Even though a fight may now be unlikely. Mosley, ever the fighter is not giving up, and he promises a fight with him will provide more money to Manny Pacquiao, and he says, “It is a no lose fight for him.” Answers are in bold

Shane, how are you doing?

Mosley: I am doing well, just driving right now headed to a workout

I heard you are a big Laker fan, did you get to see any of NBA Finals games at all?

Mosley:No I didn’t, I just watched. But I was happy to see Kobe and them win.

Now back to boxing, what are your thoughts about Miguel Cotto-Manny Pacquiao? It seems to be a done deal almost. Read more

By Greg Paterson - Paul Butlin is a hard working Heavyweight from Melton Mowbray in the midlands of England. He started boxing at 24, after training in martial arts, and turned pro at 26 so has been learning on the job so far, his 12-9 record does not show his boxing ability.

On the 20th of June he faces arguably his toughest fight to date against the highly touted Kronk fighter Jonathan Banks on the undercard of Klitschko vs Chageav. Banks recently fought Tomas Adamek for the IBF Cruiserweight title and gave a brave showing before being knocked out in the 8th by the Ring Magazine Cruiserweight champion, but against Butlin he is fighting at Heavyweight. The Myth of Miguel Cotto Being a Bigger Draw then Shane Mosley

June 17, 2009 · posted by Julius Stecker · 39 Comments ·

I feel like I am doing the boxing version of the Discovery Channels Mythbusters. People will believe what they hear if they hear it enough. We always hear, don’t fight Sugar Shane Mosley, he isn’t a big draw. He doesn’t sell tickets…etc. I decided to do a little research and I found that yes Miguel Cotto has out sold Mosley in tickets in New York City and out East. And I also found out that yes Shane Mosley can’t sell out a fight when he fights Luis Collazo. I also found out that the 2 biggest crowds in Staples Center history involved Shane Mosley. But forget gate attractions for a second. I decided to look at PPV buys, and I was astounded by what I found. Folks it is even close, Shane Mosley’s PPV numbers are double that of Miguel Cotto. Yes, he has 2 fights with Oscar De La Hoya which inflates his numbers. But even if you take those fight out, he still out sells Miguel Cotto. I did a break down of 5 PPV events of Shane Mosley and 4 of Miguel Cotto, and like I said, numbers don’t lie my friends.

Hall of Famers Should Fight Hall of Famers-No to Cotto-Pacquiao

June 16, 2009 · posted by Julius Stecker · 16 Comments ·

After watching this past weekends fight between Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey, I thought 2 things. One was how much I admire Miguel Cotto as a fighter. He is tough, he has heart and he is skilled. But I was also thinking to myself, was that a hall of fame performance. Was that worthy to earn him a fight with Manny Pacquiao? Now Cotto may one day be Hall of Fame worthy, which I think he will eventually be. But he isn’t today. Pacquiao should be looking elsewhere for a challenge.

Manny Pacquiao is the best fighter of his generation; he has won titles in 6 divisions and has been a 4 division lineal champion. He only has few fights left. He should settle for nothing less then legacy fights. And while Cotto is an excellent fighter, he is not yet a legendary fighter. What Pacquiao needs is fights against legends. Anything less then Floyd Mayweather Jr, Sugar Shane Mosley or a 3rd match against Juan Manual Marquez would be unsatisfying. Let’s examine the prospects.

The Top 20 Fighters Since 1990–Pacquiao Number 1

June 14, 2009 · posted by Julius Stecker · 53 Comments ·

For what it’s worth; I thought Joshua Clottey beat Miguel Cotto last night by a 114-113 margin, but I have no problem with the decision. In close fights, fighters should realize they could come out on the losing end. Did you really believe Cotto was going to lose a decision in a close fight at Madison Square Garden. Was it a great fight; no. But both men proved their metal, and maybe some day they will end up on a top 20 list like the one below.

I love these lists. Not because I am particular good at them, but because it sparks debate. When people read this list, I will hear the words, ‘idiot’, ‘stupid’, and ‘foolish’. But it is also the only time that I hear those words, and I don’t feel insulted. You see we all have opinions, mine no better then the next man.
