Ricky Hatton photo ???©Curtis McCormickRicky Hatton returned to the light welterweight ranks in authoritative fashion last night at Las Vegas’ Paris Hotel, overcoming Colombian strongman Juan Urango via a wide points decision to once again claim the IBF 140 lb title as well as the IBO belt.

Ricky’s younger brother Matthew Hatton was also in the winner’s circle, showing a heavy right hand in stopping Frank Houghtaling for the vacant IBF International Welterweight title.

Ex-lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo had his hands full with sharp boxing NABF Light Welter Champion Herman Ngoudjo, but pulled out a split decision victory to set up a hotly anticipated showdown with Ricky Hatton scheduled for June at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Things didn’t all go the way of Ricky Hatton during the bout with Urango but “The Hitman” managed to overcome any adversity posed by the reigning champion and found a way to win, even if it wasn’t pretty at times.

In Castillo, Hatton will tangle with his most dangerous adversary since the rough and tumble battle with Kostya Tszyu almost two years ago, and a win against the Mexican body puncher would almost certainly lead to a showdown with modern day great multi weight world champion Floyd Mayweather.

Danny Green Crushes Paul Murdoch In Two

Filed Under Uncategorized | Comments Off

IBF Pan Pacific Light Heavyweight Champion Danny Green crushed durable PABA titlist Paul Murdoch in two rounds last night in front of 3,000 fans at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Melbourne, Australia.

Win the thrilling victory, the hammer fisted Green, 23-3 (21), now has a clear path to challenge the winner of February’s WBA title contest between reigning champion Silvio Branco and number one contender Stipe Drews in Germany.

But “The Green Machine” also has a mind to rematch domestic arch rival Anthony Mundine, who defeated Green by points decision last May in a WBA Super Middleweight title eliminator. Mundine must first get past another of his bitter rivals, Sam Soliman, when the two square off in March for the vacant WBA 168 lb title in Sydney.

Perth based Green had one of his better career showings against Murdoch, 26-7-1 (16), who had gone ten rounds with perhaps the light heavyweight division’s must under-rated champion, WBO kingpin Zsolt Erdei, less than a year ago.

Showing top form, Green decked Murdoch in the first round with a stinging double jab that caught the longstanding PABA titlist completely by surprise. Murdoch beat the count but the Geelong puncher was
finished just 65 seconds into the second round when Green connected with a full blooded left hook that hurtled Murdoch to the canvas.

Undefeated WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev (46-0, 34 KOs) is slowly but surely closing in on Rocky Marciano???´s record of 49 wins without defeat as he stopped Jameel McCline on Saturday night in Switzerland. In round three of the “biggest” heavyweight fight ever, McCline went down after exchanging punches with the Russian Giant. He immediately clutched his knee and realized his kneecap had popped out, prompting the referee to stop the bout on the ring doctor???´s advice.

“For a heavyweight that weighs more than 270 pounds it is vital to keep the balance all the time,” Valuev said after the fight. “Jameel wasn???´t in a stable position at that very moment.” McCline was stretchered out off the ring and immediately taken to a local Swiss hospital for further examination. His patella tendon appears to be torn. “I feel very sorry for him,” added Valuev. “But something like this can always happen in sports. Every athlete runs danger of picking up injuries. Too bad we couldn???´t show the fantastic audience a longer fight.” .. Read more
