Five-foot-11 1/2-inch Celestino ?¢??¬??The Towering Inferno?¢??¬?¯ Caballero successfully defended his World Boxing Association super bantamweight championship Friday, March 16, halting Ricardo Castillo by technical knockout in the ninth round of their main event on the nationally televised ?¢??¬??Tribal Pride 2?¢??¬?¯ card at the Hard Rock Resort & Casino in Hollywood, Fla.
The one-sided bout ended at 2:02 of the ninth round when the corner of the game but thoroughly beaten Castillo gauged he had sustained enough of a battering.
?¢??¬??I want to unify all the titles at 122 (pounds),?¢??¬?¯ said Caballero, now with a record of 26-2 and 19 knockouts.
?¢??¬??As the rounds went on I became more aggressive,?¢??¬?¯ said the lanky, hard-hitting southpaw from Panama. ?¢??¬??I did not feel his punches, but I knew I was hurting him.?¢??¬?¯

Corrales-Clottey April 7 on SHOWTIME
Filed Under Uncategorized | Comments Off
Three-time world champion Diego Corrales will move up two weight classes when he returns to SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on Saturday, April 7, 2007, to take on world-ranked challenger Joshua Clottey.
SHOWTIME will televise the 10-round welterweight bout at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast). Gary Shaw Productions will promote the event from The Shrine Mosque in Springfield, Missouri.
While the change in weight from 135 to 147 pounds is a considerable step for most boxers, Corrales says it was a natural progression for him.
?¢??¬??I couldn?¢??¬??¢t make the weight at lightweight anymore,?¢??¬?¯ he said. ?¢??¬??It took me three weeks to get under 142 pounds, and I was damn near killing myself just to make weight. ?¢??¬??One-forty-seven is a much more natural weight for me. This change is going to be the best thing for me.?¢??¬?¯
Corrales (40-4, 33 KOs) hopes the combination of the weight change and replacing his revered trainer Joe Goossen, with whom he won his title belts, for long-time friend and respected trainer Dickie Wood will be a recipe for success. Read more

Duddy Beats Bonsante
Filed Under Uncategorized | Comments Off
John Duddy: ?¢??¬??Anthony came to fight; unfortunately we clashed heads in the second. He tried to keep moving. I was a little rusty. He?¢??¬??¢s gutsy and it (cut) was unfortunate. I think I won every round. I promise to put on a better performance the next time around. He caught me with one or two shots but never hurt me. He?¢??¬??¢s experienced but I thought I was well in control of the fight.?¢??¬?¯
Anthony Bonsante: ?¢??¬??It wasn?¢??¬??¢t the cut. It was the blood in my eyes. I was trying to take him into the 10th. I sucked it up for a few rounds. Duddy?¢??¬??¢s a warrior. I?¢??¬??¢d like to do it again.?¢??¬?¯
Giovanni Lorenzo: ?¢??¬??I felt good but that?¢??¬??¢s not what I wanted. On a scale of 1 to 10, I was a 7. I leave (future fights) up to my manager, but we?¢??¬??¢ve talked about (John) Duddy. I wanted to show respect (large green washable shamrock on his back) to Irish Ropes Promotions for putting me on this card and to all of the Irish. Tonight I was half Dominican and half Irish.?¢??¬?¯
Andy Lee: ?¢??¬??I knew he was trying to pick my jab. He has a lot of experience and skills. For two rounds he did pick my jabs, trying to set me up, but I threw a short jab and cracked him. My composure was a lot better tonight. I used my skills and waited for the right shot.?¢??¬?¯

Holyfield vs Maddalone

Vinny Maddalone Training Camp Notes …On Training: ?¢??¬??Al Certo and I have been training very hard for this fight. At the crack of dawn, he has me out in the snow doing my roadwork. My sparring has been intense with some of the best guys we could find. They are preparing me for everything that Holyfield will throw at me.?¢??¬?¯ ?¢??¬??Evander Holyfield is a smart fighter. He has a strong inside game. Al Certo and I have designed a strategy where we will punish him for being in my range.?¢??¬?¯
On Holyfield:
?¢??¬??I am not Fres Oquendo or Jermey Bates. I will take the fight to him. I have never taken a backward step in my entire career. I come to fight.?¢??¬?¯
?¢??¬??He is a well conditioned athlete and I am prepared RIGHT NOW to go the distance. This will be the fight of my life and I do not plan on coming out the loser.?¢??¬?¯
?¢??¬??Holyfield is a throwback fighter from the days of Marciano, Frazier and Dempsey. My trainer, Al Certo, is a throwback himself. He has seen the greats first hand and worked with them. ?¢??¬??As for running from Iggy, that’s a joke! I’m from Brownsville, never ran and never will! I got nothing against Iggy but he’s in way over his head and he’s gonna get hurt. This is not the first time Ibragimov?¢??¬??¢s people have chosen to throw public insults at Briggs?¢??¬?¦a fact that Briggs vows will only result in further pain for their man. ?¢??¬??They aren’t showing me the respect you should show a world champion and taking shots at me while I was suffering from pneumonia was classless.
