Given the lack of clarification on the terms of Frank Warren’s offer for British and Commonwealth super middleweight champion Carl Froch to challenge WBO champion Joe Calzaghe, Froch’s promoter Mick Hennessy has tabled a proposal of his own to stage the all-British super fight on a Hennessy Sports event either this July or September.
“After being made aware of Frank Warren’s comments over the last few days, I’m pleased to confirm that negotiations have started with his company Sports Network about a super fight between Carl Froch and Joe Calzaghe,” confirmed Hennessy.. Read more

In their first battle for the WBO championship, Brewster won the title with a fifth round technical knockout on April 10, 2004 in Las Vegas. Valuev-Chagaev Results
Filed Under Uncategorized | Comments Off
Nikolai Valuev has vowed to bounce back stronger than ever after losing his WBA heavyweight belt to Ruslan Chagaev. The mandatory challenger handed the Russian Giant his first defeat in 48 contests when he clinched a close majority decision in Stuttgart on Saturday night. He was ahead 115-113 and 117-111 on two scorecards while the third judge called the bout a 114-114 draw. “It certainly was an exciting encounter and a great night of boxing - except for the outcome,” manager Wilfried Sauerland stated. “It was very close.”
Valuev (46-1, 34 KOs) was off to the better start and kept marching forward throughout the twelve rounds, working cleverly behind his left jab. However, it was Chagaev who landed the clearer punches. The crowd roared every time he got through with his southpaw left - even though it did little to impress the Russian Giant, who proved his great chin. Chagaev dominated the middle of the fight before Valuev upped pressure towards the end, firing in a few good combinations himself. Read more

Manny Pacquiao Beats Solis
Filed Under Uncategorized | Comments Off
Manny Pacquiao knocked out the previously unbeaten Jorge Solis in the eighth round to retain his WBC International super featherweight title. Pacquiao took control of the fight after an accidental head butt by Solis in the sixth round opened a cut over his left eye. Pacquiao sent Solis to the canvas in the eighth. Solis got to his feet before the count of 10 but was immediately dropped again, prompting referee Vic Drakulich to stop the bout.

Chagaev steals Valuev’s WBA heavyweight title
Filed Under Uncategorized | Comments Off
Rocky’s record is safe but I almost have to feel for previously undefeated Nickolay Valuev. Challenger Ruslan Chagaev was awarded a twelve round majority decision and with it the W.B.A. heavyweight title. One judge had it a draw. The other two scored it for Chagaev. I had Valuev winning by a couple of rounds and I thought that I was being generous to Chagaev. Nickolay had his jab out there in Chagaev’s face the entire fight. Ruslan landed the harder shots with occasional straight lefts to the head and body but for the most part Valuev kept him on the outside. Neither man was seriously hurt in a contest I found rather boring.

Mogens Palle is wondering whether WBO super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe, who now admits he broke his left hand in his “cartoon fight” with no-hoper Peter Manfredo Saturday night in Wales, will actually face any credible or capable opponent in London July 21.
“Where can promoter Frank Warren find a doctor who would advise a boxer who breaks his hand to fight on two month’s rest? I find Calzaghe and Warren to be like “Alice In Wonderland” as things just get “curiouser and curiouser” with them. Maybe I should say it’s “Joe In Warrenland,” Palle said. Read more

Nikolai Valuev highly focused
Filed Under Uncategorized | Comments Off
Two days before his first mandatory title defense, undefeated WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev today came face-to-face with Uzbek challenger Ruslan Chagaev. It was a peaceful encounter, though, as both camps tried to play down the importance of the Russian Giant´s enormous 11-inch height advantage. “It has not affected our preparations at all,” Valuev´s coach Manuel Gabrielian said at the official press conference. “Niko is used to fighting smaller opponents. It won´t make a difference for him.”
Valuev (47-0), who is slowly but surely closing in on Rocky Marciano´s dream record (49-0), is happy to see the back of a long, yet very successful tune-up period. “We started right after the fight against McCline,” he stated. “We really took a lot of time. I am in perfect shape and ready.” Manager Wilfried Sauerland also praised the form of his star fighter. “He is lighter than in most of his recent bouts which proves how intense his training has been. I am sure he will win the fight.” Sauerland added it was too early to discuss a potential unification battle against Klitschko. “First he has to beat Chagaev who is a strong fighter. Then we´ll see what happens.” Read more

Calzaghe vs Taylor?
Filed Under Uncategorized | 1 Comment
Promoter Frank Warren has offered middleweight champion JERMAIN TAYLOR the chance to do what 20 other men couldn’t — dethrone boxing’s current longest-reigning world champion JOE CALZAGHE in a battle of undefeated world champions. Warren has offered Taylor four million dollars to come to the UK in July to challenge Calzaghe for Calzaghe’s super middleweight title and has agreed to having the WBO assign an American to referee the fight. Inasmuch as the fight would be at 168 pounds, Taylor’s title would not be at stake..
“Saturday’s crowd in Cardiff for Joe’s title defense against Peter Manfredo exceeded 35,000 — a European indoor record. The only way to surpass that is for Joe to fight the best man out there and that man is Jermain Taylor,” said Warren “I know Jermain wants to fight only the biggest fights and make the most money, just like Joe, and to do that we need to hold the fight over here where we can build on the record attendance Joe established last weekend. We will even provide a bit of home cooking to go along with the four million dollar purse and agree to have an American assigned to referee the fight.”
Calzaghe (43-0, 32 KOs), from Newbridge, Wales, successfully defended the super middleweight title he has held since 1997 for a landmark 20th consecutive time when he stopped Peter Manfredo, Jr. at 1:30 of the third round last Saturday, the most of any British champion and tied for fourth on boxing’s all-time list with Larry Holmes and Bernard Hopkins.

Liakhovich-Brewster: Life Comes At You Fast”
Filed Under Uncategorized | Comments Off
In April of 2006 in my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio two heavyweights battled in what I felt was by far the heavyweight fight of the year. The World Boxing Organization’s version of the title was up for grabs. Lamon Brewster was defending his title against Sergei Liakhovich. Brewster had come from behind to batter Wladimir Klitschko in five rounds to win the title. Among his defenses was a one round blitz of Andrew Golota.
Sergei’s claim to fame was an upset decision over then highly regarded Dominick Guinn. Sergei was expected to put up a decent fight but most expected Brewster to win. Read more
