OS ANGELES, May 10 – Due to an injury to his left hand suffered during training, two-division world champion Joan Guzman has been forced to withdraw from his WBO lightweight title challenge against interim champion Michael Katsidis on May 26th at The Arena at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California..

“He injured his left hand during a sparring session on Tuesday,” said Jose Nunez, Guzman’s manager. “Fortunately, it was not broken or fractured; there is only tissue damage on his wrist and pinkie finger. Las Vegas Doctor Steven Sanders recommended two weeks rest for his left hand, but he will continue to train at the gym using only his right hand.” Read more

Zab Judah is running 8 miles a day, sparring 10 or more rounds daily, taking on spar partners who studied Miguel Cotto video tapes “for weeks” said promoter Brian Young today in Memphis.

“Zab is fully prepared,” said Young, president of Prize Fight Boxing which promotes Judah. “Zab just sparred 10 hard rounds at our gym in Memphis. He went in against sparring partners who studied Cotto video tapes for weeks.” Read more

With just over one week to go before his big showdown against Kelly Pavlik in Memphis Tennessee on HBO, Edison Miranda, the ‘People’s Champion’, took some time to talk about his thoughts for his upcoming fight.

“Kelly Pavlik is a very unlucky guy. I had a goal after I saw the horrible performance that Jermain Taylor gave when he undeservingly took the belt from Bernard Hopkins. My goal was to get in the ring with Taylor and show him how a true champion fights. I spent a lot of money flying to Las Vegas, getting a room and going to this fight. It was a waist of my money and I want a refund. I will pick Jermain up and shake the change out of his pockets if I need to. Now Pavlik is the last man standing in front of me before I have this shot. Nothing is going to stop me. When I step into the ring I will turn into a monster and destroy him. I have never been so motivated or trained so hard for a fight. I will not stop my attack until Kelly Pavlik is laying on the ground for good. LAS VEGAS (May 10, 2007) — The memorial service for Diego “Chico” Corrales, 29, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 15, at the Palm Green Valley Mortuary (7600 South Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89123) http://www.palmmortuary.com/map_green.htm. The public viewing will be from 9 A.M. to Noon PT with the funeral service, conducted by Richard Steele, beginning at Noon. Burial will be immediately following the service. A two-division world champion, Corrales (40-5, 33 KOs), was killed in a motorcycle crash Monday evening in Las Vegas. It was the second anniversary of his epic lightweight title unification victory over Jose Luis Castillo.

Floyd Mayweather Jr: “Boxing has lost a great warrior and a gifted athlete. Diego Corrales had the heart of a champion, and while we were competitors in the ring, he was someone who I greatly respected and will be remembered for his spirit and passion in and out of the ring.
