Floyd Mayweather, the recently crowned super welterweight champion and recognized pound-for-pound best boxer in the world today, has heard enough trash talking from Ricky Hatton over the recent weeks and is ready to step in the ring and “beat him all the way back to England.” The announcement comes just days after Hatton’s title defense win over Jose Luis Castillo Saturday night and less than two months after Mayweather’s win over Oscar de la Hoya May 5th..

Evander Holyfield has been in training camp for about six weeks, and according to trainer Ronnie Shields the four-time world heavyweight champion is ahead of schedule: “I wish the fight was this Saturday. I’m going to bring him down now even though there’s still two weeks to go before the fight. That’s how ready he is” . . . It was nearly 20 years ago when Shields began his first tour of duty as Holyfield’s trainer. In their first bout together Holyfield stopped Carlos DeLeon to unify the cruiserweight championship.

What is different between the Holyfield then and now? “I don’t see any difference. Still the same speed and he works just as hard. Evander is wise and he uses his knowledge to the fullest. I guess some people as they get older they find it harder to have goals. He’s not like that. He always sets goals for himself” . . . Holyfield will end sparring late next week. Cotto Flattens Judah

Miguel Cotto retained his WBA welterweight championship with an 11th-round stoppage of Zab Judah in front of 20,000 boxing fans at Madison Square Garden on Saturday. Judah suffered two low blows and a cut to the right eye early in the contest and seemed to struggle from then on. Cotto knocked Judah down with a right hand early in the 11th round, making blood flow from a welt above Judah’s right eye.

Cotto then landed a straight right and followed it with a left. That pushed referee Arthur Mercante Jr. stepped in and hugged Judah, stopping the match for good 49 seconds into the 11th round.
