The 46th annual WBC Convention in Chengdu, China officially declared that world heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko has to face mandatory challenger Juan Carlos Gomez in his very next fight. Klitschko had requested to do a voluntary defense first but the Board of Governors chaired by President Dr. Jose Sulaiman decided in favour of no. 1 contender Gomez who had won the final elimination bout against Vladimir Virchis on September 27th in Hamburg. Newly crowned WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko has fuelled speculation that British boxer Lennox Lewis is about to return to the ring. Klitschko reclaimed the WBC heavyweight title when Samuel Peter withdrew in the eighth round last Saturday night in Berlin. In an interview on Setanta Sports News during Steve Bunce’s Boxing Hour Klitschko hinted that Lewis could be about to return. “Right now, after the Peter fight, a fight against Lennox Lewis is very interesting. Maybe Lennox Lewis is thinking about coming back. “I’m very grateful to Lennox; he gave me the chance to prove my skills against the strongest heavyweight in the world. After the fight nobody knew who the winner was. I beat Lennox Lewis by points but the doctor had to stop the fight because I had a huge gash. “In a couple of weeks I’ll have more information about my next fight and my next opponent.”

With an impressive return to the boxing ring, Vitali Klitschko reclaimed his WBC belt on October 11, 2008, in Berlin, Germany. 1400 days outside of the ring, beat Samuel Peter by technical KO when the Nigerian could not continue in round 9. Klitschko fought tall and used his precise left jab and hook to keep Peter from closing the distance. His consistent jab, along with stiff over hand rights proved too much for Peter.

Behind on all cards, Peter did not return to the ring for round 9 and the fight was stopped. Klitschko’s victory marked the first time in boxing history that two brothers hold heavyweight titles simultaneously. Dino Duva, president of Duva Boxing and promoter of World Boxing Council Heavyweight Champion Samuel Peter, announced today that an agreement has been reached with K2 Promotions for the “Nigerian Nightmare’ to defend his title against former champion Vitali Klitschko, thus avoiding a purse bid.

The two sides reached accord at meetings in Mexico City yesterday, and the WBC world title clash will take place sometime this fall, with date, site and television to be determined in the near future. Read more
