As if next Saturday’s world title fight between undefeated super middleweight champion JOE CALZAGHE (42-0, 31 KO) and Season One Contender finalist PETER MANFREDO (26-3, 12 KO) wasn’t big enough, the bout became even bigger.
The title fight, in which Calzaghe will attempt to defend his crown for the 20th time, will be broadcast live from Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales on HBO, Saturday, April 7, at 5 P.M. EDT / 2 P.M. PDT as part of HBO’s Free Preview Weekend in the U.S. A replay will air later that evening at 10 P.M. ET/PT.
Calzaghe, boxing’s currrent longest-reigning world champion, has held the title since 1997.
Tied for sixth-place on boxing’s all-time list for consecutive successful title defenses, a victory next Saturday will propel him into a fourth-place tie with Larry Holmes and Bernard Hopkins.
Manfredo has enlisted the help of five-division world champion SUGAR RAY LEONARD as a strategist. Do you believe in déjà vu? On April 6, Ray Leonard celebrates the 20th anniversary of his “upset of the year,” when he came out of a three-year retirement to dethrone undisputed middleweight champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
Ray will be on the opposite side of the corner this time, but he has stated that he recognizes a lot of similar signs in Manfredo’s training that he had himself 20 years ago, that point to another upset in the making.
