CARDIFF, WALES (March 22, 2007) — Boxing’s current longest-reigning world champion JOE CALZAGHE, former NABO champion and current Top-Five contender PETER MANFREDO, Jr., the first alumnus from “The Contender” to fight for a world title, and five-division world champion SUGAR RAY LEONARD, will host a media conference call to discuss their world title rumble, This Tuesday! March 27, beginning at 2 P.M. ET / 11 A.M. PT.
Calzaghe (42-0, 31 KOs), from Newbridge, Wales, has been world champion since 1997 and will be making his 20th title defense — which, if successful, would place him in a fourth-place tie on boxing all-time list with Larry Holmes and Bernard Hopkins — against Manfredo (26-3, 12 KOs), from Providence, RI, Saturday, April 7, at Millennium Stadaium in Cardiff, Wales.
HBO will televise the fight live at 5 p.m. ET / 2 p.m. PT with a replay later that evening at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Over 25,000 tickets have been sold to a Calzaghe homecoming Manfredo and Leonard have plans to spoil. Leonard is planning to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his “upset victory of the year” over undisputed middleweight champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler by watching Manfredo pull off his own “upset of the year.” Leonard has been advising Team Manfredo for this fight.
