Terrell James (Retired Boxers Foundation) - Whoever said success breeds complacency certainly didn’t have Kelly Pavlik in mind. Pavilik said he wasn’t taking Gary Lockett lightly and would prove it in the ring. Last night, Pavilik was true to his word, blitzing the overmatched Lockett in three rounds in front of a feverish Atlantic City crowd. From the opening bell, Lockett was determined to go to toe. For his troubles, he managed to land an impressive left-hook, right-hook combination that slightly jarred the defending champion. There was only one problem for the Welshman—they were his best shots and the Youngstown hero hadn’t even warmed up yet. Midway through the first round, Pavlik found his groove, landing crisp jabs followed by his trademark sledgehammer right hand. Later in the round, another right from the undefeated Pavlik sent Lockett reeling into the corner covering up to survive the first anxious moments of the fight. Read more

Kelly Pavlik scored a technical knockout over Gary Lockett at 1:40 of the third round at Boardwalk Hall. Lockett twice went down in the second round, getting up the second time with five seconds left before the bell, but he wouldn’t make it much further. Lockett went down again early in the third round, and even though he struggled to his feet along the ropes, he clearly had enough. The referee called the fight at 1:40 of the round. Read more

Paul Williams avenged the only loss of his career in impressive fashion, regaining his WBO welterweight title with a first-round technical knockout of Carlos Quintana. Williams stunned Quintana in the opening round with a right hand, Quintana tried to hold on but a flurry of punches ended with a straight left hand that put Quintana down for the first time. A still shaky Quintana regained his feet but Williams ended the fight a short while later with a left hook that sent Quintana to the floor. Referee Ed Claudio stepped in to stop the fight as Quintana fell to the floor taking Williams to the ground with him. Read more

Sergio Mora, in his first world championship fight, wrested the WBC Super Welterweight belt from veteran champion Vernon Forrest with a hard-fought majority decision at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. Ringside judges scored the bout 116-112, 115-113 and 114 a piece. Yuriorkis Gamboa beat Darling Jimenez to win the vacant WBC international super featherweight championship. “El Ciclon de Guantanamo” dominated most of the fight but was down in the fourth when Jimenez caught him with a left.

ARENA-CEO Ahmet ?ner: “Gamboa is a complete fighter but tonight I was not happy with his performance. He was a little bit too arrogant and gave me a hard time. You must not forget that it was only his 10th pro-fight though. He has got to improve his defence but he will definitely be world champion one day. After all I am glad that he had to go the distance. Ulli Wegner was full of praise for Marco „Captain“ Huck after he won the IBF Intercontinental Cruiserweight Title with a ninth-round TKO victory over Frantisek Kasanic in Bayreuth on Saturday night. The 23-year-old German floored his opponent with a series of power shots, and when he had him in big trouble again following several hard punches, the referee stepped in to wave the bout off. “I am proud and very pleased with Marco?s performance,” Wegner lauded. “He stuck to the game plan and did very well tactically. I was surprised how much shots Kasanic could take.” Huck not only landed power shots to body and head but also used to left jab to make impact. Shaun George upset Chris Byrd in the former IBF and WBO heavyweight champion’s first pro fight as a light heavyweight, stopping him in the ninth round Friday night at Cox Pavilion. Byrd separated his shoulder on the first knockdown in the ninth and was taken to a hospital following the fight. George recorded his first knockout of the round at the 2:10 mark. Read more

In front of a sold out Bally’s Atlantic City crowd presented by Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing, “Mighty” Mike Arnaoutis (19-2-2 9KO) retained his USBA JR. Welterweight title with a spirited, hard fought, 12 round unanimous decsion over previously undefeated Lanardo Tyner (19-1 11KO) by scores of 118-110 twice, and 116-112.

The fight was high energy all the way and had the enthusiastic and vibrant Greek crowd on their feet throughout much of the contest cheering on the popular Arnaoutis. Tyner came out strong in rounds one and two, often backing Arnaoutis up while landing heavy rights and lefts. Arnaoutis picked up the pace in the third round and kept the fight in the center of the ring while landing crisp jabs and hard body shots. Both men traded freely as the bell sounded ending the round. Joe Calzaghe battled his way back from a first-round knockdown to win a split decision over Bernard Hopkins on Saturday. Hopkins knocked down Calzaghe with a right hand just 70 seconds in at the Thomas & Mack Center. With a Ruiz like defense and good counterpunching, Hopkins repeatedly negated Calzaghe’s attempts to trade blows and gain physical control, causing more frustration than Calzaghe has ever felt. Calzaghe landed 33 percent of his 707 punches, while Hopkins connected with 27 percent of his 468 blows. Calzaghe had the edge in power punches with both total blows and accuracy, and he also outjabbed Hopkins. After 12 rounds, Judge Ted Gimza scored it 115-112 for Calzaghe, and Chuck Giampa favored Calzaghe 116-111. Judge Adalaide Byrd gave it 114-113 to Hopkins, as did many reporters at ringside—including The Associated Press, which also favored Hopkins 114-113 despite Calzaghe’s dominance in the final five rounds.
