In his second appearance at HBO’s Boxing After Dark Yuriorkis Gamboa once more thrilled the audience with a spectacular knockout victory over previously unbeaten Marcos Ramirez (now 25-1, 16 kos). “El Ciclon de Guantanamo” was knocked down by an elbow shot in the first round. Gamboa recovered quickly and came back to overwhelm Ramirez with his enormous speed and irresistible power, sending his opponent to the canvas with a stunning uppercut before finishing him off after 1:41 minute in the second. Undefeated junior middleweight ALFREDO “Perro” ANGULO scored his 10th consecutive knockout victory tonight, recording a 10th-round TKO over Andrey Tsurkan in a battle of Top-10 contenders. Vernon Forrest reclaimed his WBC 154-pound title Saturday night, battering Sergio Mora in a lopsided unanimous decision that re-established the 37-year-old veteran as an elite junior middleweight. Forrest (41-3) lost his title to Mora in an ugly majority-decision upset June 7, but the Atlanta native had little trouble sending Mora to the first loss of his career in the mandated rematch. Juan Manuel Marquez was nothing but bad news for Joel Casamayor. Marquez won his 135-pound debut Saturday night, stopping linear champion Casamayor for the first time in the Cuban’s career with a dynamic flurry late in the 11th round. Marquez (49-4-1, 36 KOs) held title belts in two lighter divisions over the last five years, but moved up to lightweight in hopes of landing a third bout with Manny Pacquiao after going 0-1-1 against the pound-for-pound king.
