John arrived in Jakarta on Thursday (following successive training camps in Perth, Western Australia and the jungles of Banyuwangi, Indonesia), and completed his final rounds of sparring with stablemate William Kickett and Indonesian prospect Aleksander Bajawa on Saturday night ahead of his March 3 shootout with Venezuelan Jose ?????Cheo???? Rojas. Following weeks of speculation the promoters settled on the Indoor Tennis Stadium, Senayan, Jakarta, Indonesia, as the venue for this meaningful featherweight battle.
John (38-0-1, 20 KOs) is determined to avenge the only blemish on his record ?????? a four-round technical draw in December 2004 with the 35-year-old Rojas (23-5-1-1 ND, 15 KOs), who looking to capture a world strap in his fourth attempt.
The 27-year-old Indonesian sensation has boxed an incredible 284 career rounds since turning professional in June 1998, at an average of 7.28 rounds per fight. That figure is indicative of his volume punching style; many of John?????s stoppages have come in the later rounds. Of the 284 rounds, 74 are in world title encounters (John?????s championship record is 6-0-1, 1 KO).
The hard-nosed Rojas turned pro way back in July 1989, but was inactive for almost six years between 1991-1997. He?????s amassed 155 rounds as a professional at an average of 5.16 per contest. Though 0-2-1 in world title challengers, Rojas has defeated former world champion John Michael Johnson on points, and impressively kayoed current WBA 122lb world champion Celestino Caballero in 3 rounds back in 2003.
